melon    Noun: e.g., Melons in today’s Hollywood include Ben Affleck, Katherine Heigl, Charlie Sheen and Dustin Hoffman.

Definition: An actor or actress with a large head.

History: Attributed to director John Huston, who lengendarily said, “The bigger the melon, the bigger the star.” (Chances are the bilingual Huston actually said "cabeza," Spanish for head, which became confused with "Casaba" and was turned into "melon.") Huston had reason to respect melons, having directed such huge headliners as Humphrey Bogart, Kirk Douglas, Marilyn Monroe and Richard Burton. And it made sense. Film acting is largely an art of the face. Ergo the bigger the face, the bigger the presence.

In any case, it led to caveats such as: In romantic movies, the actor with top billing should never play opposite a melon unless he or she is also a melon. Which is why it’s unlikely we’ll ever see a romantic comedy with Katherine Heigl billed second.
